Townsville City Council has become the first local government to receive ecotourism accreditation. TCC was certified during the 2006 International Ecotourism Conference for its "eco-catchment education tours" developed for students and community groups. The tours range from two hours to one full day and educate the locals on natural water systems and their interconnectivity, giving them an understanding of how activities on the mainland can affect the reef. The tours start atop Castle Hill or Mount Stuart and visits includes places such as the Ross Dam, the Town Commons, Ross River and Ross Creek, Serpentine Lagoon and Cromarty Wetland.

Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Sustainable Development Committee, Ann Bunnell, says that It essentially means the community can be assured our product is backed by a commitment to ecological sustainability, natural area management and a quality ecotourism experience. Council’s manager of Environmental Management Services Greg Bruce, said it was also a way of showing residents and students around their own backyards and raise their awareness of Townsville’s beautiful environment and rich ecosystems.
