THE HISTORY
Victoria Park was gazetted a park in 1887. It was named in honour
of the jubilee of Queen Victoria. Since that time it has been
associated with sport and recreation in the suburb of South Townsville.
It was in the late 19th century and early 20th century, regarded
as the best football ground in Townsville. Intercity matches between
Townsville and Charters Towers were played in the park.
From the foundation of South Townsville Football Club in 1890
until 2002, it had been the home ground of the local football
team. They were regarded as particularly tough opponents; on one
occasion the West End team refused to play at Victoria Park unless
given promises that Souths supporters would not throw rocks if
their team was defeated. There were also tennis courts in the
park and for a time a cycling track. Open air entertainment was
also staged in the park.
