THE HISTORY
Rowes Bay:
Rowes Bay was named after Charles Seville Rowe one of the first
settlers at Cleveland Bay. Although, for the first 80 years the
bay was recorded as ‘Rose Bay’ and ‘Ross Bay’,
only after the Second World War did the name ‘Rowes’
come into general use.
Soroptimist Park:
The combined clubs of Soroptimist International of Townsville;
Townsville West and Townsville Breakwater were the instigators
of Soroptimist Park. An adventure playground, designed for children,
with a focus on handicapped facilities.
Under a 1988 Bicentennial project, Soroptimists added the nationally
significant environmental sculpture designed by Australian sculptures
to inspire the imagination of its young viewers.
The mosaic tile art works throughout the Park were completed
in 1994 as part of the International Year of the Child.
Peoples Place:
The development of this park was initiated by Angelo Gabrielli
as a place of peace and beauty for the enjoyment of the people
of Townsville. This Bicentennial Year (1988) project was constructed
with the assistance of the Townsville Rotary Club and the Townsville
City Council.
