Townsville City Council will be celebrating World Environment Day, June 5th 2005, with a host of school and community based environmental awareness activities. The celebration will showcase and strengthen partnerships within Council and throughout the local community. It will showcase Towsville City Council's commitment to be involved in a wide variety of environmental and sustainable activities.

The 10 days of activities commences on Friday the 3rd of June with an environmental display and local native plants giveaway at the Strand Night Markets. The Ecofiesta on Sunday 5th June at Queens Gardens will be the highlight event involving environmental program displays from Creek to Coral, Urban Stormwater, Total Cycle Management, Greening Townsville and Sustainable Townsville as well as a native garden display and local native plants giveaway.

Day 1 - Friday, 3rd of June

Strand Night Markets

Time: 5pm to 9pm
Come along and enjoy the great atmosphere of the Strand Night Markets and see Council's Environmental Display. Find out more about local environmental projects, environmental initiatives and details about Environment Festival Events and take away a native plant for your own garden.

Day 3 - Sunday, 5th of June - WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

EcoFiesta - Waste Fairies: Fun waste educationEcoFiesta 2005, Queens Gardens

Time: 10 am - 5pm
Come along and celebrate Townsville's Environment. Heaps of activities and over 40 displays. Presentation of the Environmental Excellence & Sustainability Awards - for Sustainability in Business Award, Community Group Award, Primary School Award and High School Award (The individual Award is presented at a separate Evening Function).

Come along and see our local native garden display and take away a plant for you garden, Urban Stormwater and Total Water Cycle Management, Sustainability and Greening Townsville Displays.

School Shade Tree presentation - Majors Creek State School

Planting of shade trees and local native plants with students from Majors Creek State School. Educational talks on "Why Trees Are Great" & a demonstration on How to Plant a Tree Successfully.

Day 6 - Wednesday, 8th of June

Supporting Creek to Coral
Catchment Tour Rowes Bay Junior Rangers and Creek to Coral Catchment Tour

The Rowes Bay Junior Rangers from Belgian Gardens State School will be embarking on a Creek to Coral catchment tour to celebrate World Ocean Day.

The tour will investigate components of the total water cycle highlighting the process involved in treating drinking water, waste water and storm water. The tour through the catchment will begin at the top of Ross River and culminate at Reef HQ, signifying the relationship and importance of the catchment with the marine environment.

Future Leaders Congress

Townsville City Council will be hosting the Future Leaders Congress for the 3rd consecutive year, to celebrate World Environment Day and World Ocean Day.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park initiative, supported by Townsville City Council and Creek to Coral will provide a unique forum for young people from schools throughout the local community to discuss and present to the congress on issues related to waterways, wetlands and the marine environment. The congress will produce a charter of shared beliefs that will be provided to civic leaders throughout Townsville.

Meet and Greet for Environmental Volunteers and Workers

Deputy Mayor Cr. Ann Bunnel  presents individual intiative awards.This is an annual celebration for the recognition of Environmental Volunteers within the Townsville Region and includes the presentation of the Environmental Excellence & Sustainability - Individual Initiative Award.
