Watering in after planting shade
trees |
Aims:
- To support Townsville schools establish shade trees in school
grounds and promote 'Sunsafe' practices
- To foster partnerships between Council and schools by involving
school children in greening and tree planting activities
|
Objectives:
- To facilitate the reestablishment of shade trees back to the
urban environment and to compliment earlier tree planting efforts
undertaken throughout Townsville’s schools
|
Outcomes:
- Shade and shelter –
the addition of trees and vegetation increases shade and shelter
to provide schools children with more enjoyable outdoor experiences
- Increased knowledge –
the program helps children learn about the natural environment
through tree identification and more frequent encounter with
local wildlife (e.g. birds and butterflies). It also adds to
the knowledge of Council staff and community participants on
natural resource management, and that knowledge will be made
available to the wider community.
|
Other Benefits:
- Trees provide natural, "low-tech" cooling
- Three well-placed trees can significantly cut costs for air
conditioning during the summer months.
- Trees provide shade, which reduce the "heat island"
effect, which results from storage of thermal energy in concrete,
steel and asphalt.
- Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and replace it with life-giving
oxygen.
- Trees provide shelter for wildlife, reduce storm water run-off,
prevent soil erosion, muffle noises, and provide for privacy.
- Trees add beauty and grace to any schools and/or community
setting
