Belgian Gardens State School
1 class, year 6 approximately 30 students

  • Arranged CSIRO Grass expert Tony Grice to run identification workshop on native grasses in the Castle Hill Grassland behind the school. He also gave tips on the best ways to propagate native grasses;
  • Nature Search conducted Trapping exercises with the class in both the grassland and rainforest areas at the school and reptile identification of skinks and butterflies;
  • As part of Environment Week 2000 TCC took to the school Yossi Ghinsburg to talk about nature and his experience of being lost in the Amazon, a snake handler from QPWS to talk about snakes and a representative of Wildlife Preservation Society who gave a slide show on mammals;
  • As part of Environment Week 2001 the school attended Flora and Fauna Day which included a tour at the Bushgarden (end of Thompson St, Mundingburra), this involved a tour of the reveg area with Greening Australia representative Steve McDermott and Community Reveg Coordinator Ally Lankester. Following the tour Water Watch Coordinator conducted water watch activities in the Ross River including waterweed id and water bugs id;
  • The school also attended Rivers and Reef Day which included talks on water quality, catchment issues including rubbish, information on Mangroves from DPI, educational games with Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and a trip to Reef HQ;
  • Land For Wildlife Officers assisted the school in registering their rainforest and grassland under the LFW program;
  • TCC Green Corp team conducted a minor project with the school that included maintenance of the established rainforest, path construction, planting and mulching.

Nelly Bay State School
1 class approximately 26 students

  • Developed a revegetation plan for the creek that runs through the school with Environment Officer, Tony O'Malley;
  • Provided assistance and planting materials to the school for the planting program carried out by Nigel Greir (Reveg expert) and David Reid (Water Watch Coordinator).

Calvary Christian College
Year 5 20 students

  • Assisted Year 5 students in the development of their Mt Louisa creek/drain rehabilitation project including the provision of plants, mulch, fertiliser and technical advice. Community Revegetation Coordinator also provided advice on the project and Water Watch Coordinator did some water quality testing with the students.

Annandale Christian School
2 classes approximately 50 students

Provided comment on a Habitat Project submission

  • Supplied trees and planting materials to the school to assist the development of the project that was being implemented with a Green Corp Team for 1 week.

Hermit Park State School
1 class 30 students

  • Assisted with the development of the frog pond in the rainforest that has been planted out with the students. Green Corps built the pond and creek area for the school and NatureSearch provided information on the best type of fish to have in the pond.

Townsville West State School
Year 1 class approximately 30 students

  • Assisted with the development of a wildlife corridor Habitat project to connect the school to the Castle Hill Environment. This project received a prize in the Habitat Competition run by CVA and Reflex Paper;
  • Provide planting materials and technical support for plantings held outside National Tree Day. This included assistance from EMS Staff and Green Corp;
  • As part of Environment Week 2000 TCC took to the school Yossi Ghinsburg to talk about nature and his experience of being lost in the Amazon, a snake handler from QPWS to talk about snakes and a representative of Wildlife Preservation Society who gave a slide show on mammals;
  • Held a second Snake Talk at the school in 2002 for the students (year 1) to learn more about snakes in the natural environment;
  • Assisted the year1 students on a weed identification project that they were preparing as part of their environmental program.

Annandale State School
2 classes approximately 60 students, year 3

  • Community Revegetation Coordinator provided support to the school to conduct 2 small tree plantings along the drain beside the school. The Coordinator also met with the class regularly to teach them about the importance of revegetation, use of local native trees and wildlife benefits as part of the project;
  • EMS staff assisted with the watering of the trees during school holiday periods;
  • As part of Environment Week 2000 TCC took to the school Yossi Ghinsburg to talk about nature and his experience of being lost in the Amazon, a snake handler from QPWS to talk about snakes and a representative of Wildlife Preservation Society who gave a slide show on mammals.

Ignatius Park College
1 class Yr 10 approximately 20 students

  • Assisted with the development of the Rainforest project with Year 10 students, this was later submitted for an Environmental Excellence Award.

Pimlico High School
1 class year 10 approximately 25 students

  • Community Revegetation Coordinator gave presentations on one class on bush foods and assisted with the development of a Bushfood garden area within the school grounds.

Stuart Primary School
1 class approximately 30 students
