> State of Environment Reporting
.
A
starting point for effective environmental management
is information about the environment's condition
and our impacts on it. State
of the Environment Reporting is accepted
worldwide as a means of collecting this information
and monitoring environmental performance over
time. Importantly, State
of the Environment Reporting is also
about inspiring all of us to seek better environmental
outcomes.
In 1998 the first Maroochy Shire State
of the Environment Report was produced
with comprehensive contributions from the community,
government and industry. The Report was developed
around the key themes of Land, Water, Air,
Biodiversity, Noise, Waste, and Society and Heritage.
This first State of
the Environment Report provided baseline
information and is a benchmark for future
tracking of environmental conditions and trends
in the Shire. Baseline and follow-up information
will allow Council and the community to identify
and initiate programs which protect and enhance
our environment and work towards ecological
sustainability.
State of the Environment
Reporting is compulsory in some States,
but not Queensland, so when Maroochy Shire Council
produced this report, it was only the third
Council in Queensland to begin State
of the Environment Reporting. This
is but one demonstration of how Maroochy Shire
Council is implementing it's environmental duty
of care and taking a leading role in environmental
performance in this State. |
